What’s in a Name?

Once again, the holiday season is here.  It is a season of joy and gladness.  It is a time of celebrating.  Each believer’s heart and mind are preoccupied with the various holidays of the season.  Each holiday, Reformation Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas all point us to our faith in Jesus the Christ.  It is all about Jesus, He is the reason for all seasons.  Though the world wants us to be focused on other things, Jesus keeps drawing us back to Himself.  His name becomes so precious to each of His disciples.  Jesus, which tells us that Yahweh is our salvation.

“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

The reality of Jesus our savior is magnified into an awesome principle of Yahweh with us.  God Almighty has come to dwell with us and in us.  Isaiah tells us of this when he reveals the name of the Savior as Immanuel.

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14

But Isaiah does not stop there.  In another of his many prophecies about the Messiah Isaiah calls Jesus by several other names.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

Jesus the Anointed One is also Wonderful, amazingly awesome.

“And the angel of the LORD said to him, ‘Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?”’   Judges 13:18

This Wonderful Messiah is also the one who counsels and guides us through our lives.

“I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.” Psalm 16:7

There is no one more able than the Lord Jesus the Christ to help us through our life.

“And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.” Revelation 15:3

But Jesus is not only our savior and friend, but He is also one with our eternal Father, Yahweh.

“Pray then like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.’” Matthew 6:9

Jesus gives us peace with our awesome and holy God, therefore He is the Prince of Peace.

“’I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him and restore comfort to him and his mourners, creating the fruit of the lips. Peace, peace, to the far and to the near,’ says the LORD, ‘and I will heal him.’” Isaiah 57:18-19

Meditate on the Names of Jesus this holiday season and be drawn away from the world and to the one who loves you so.  Be blessed.

Because Jesus loves us,
