Highways
Highways and roads are an integral part of our communities. They provide a path for us to travel, shop, and enjoy the different areas around us. They have intersections, exits and on ramps by which we enter or exit the highway as we merge into the flowing traffic.
The Bible speaks of highways and paths by which we transverse the different chapters of our life. One is called the Highway of Holiness by which all the redeemed travel to their destination.
“A highway will be there, a roadway, and it will be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean will not travel on it but it will be for him who walks that way, and fools will not wander on it.” Isaiah 35:8
Jesus speaks of two gates and ways by which we enter into eternal life or eternal destruction. He warns us not to take the wrong path through life.
“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Matthew 7:13–14
Some people are just wandering along on the path of life not heading anywhere or for any purpose in particular. They are just traveling along entering and exiting the highway with no apparent direction. We might refer to them as ‘Sunday driver’. But scripture warns us not to just wander through life unaware of our final destination.
“Watch the path of your feet and all your ways will be established. Do not turn to the right nor to the left; turn your foot from evil.” Proverbs 4:26–27
Some people prefer the carefree spontaneous path of life, but if we are to live with purpose and accomplish anything then we must determinedly discipline ourselves. We must order our days.
“but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.”1 Corinthians 9:27
It is not just being disciplined and organized in our daily lives, but also being disciplined and organized in our life with Jesus. We must live and do the things which allow the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit in godliness and righteousness.
“But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and alsofor the life to come.” 1Timothy 4:7–8
The evidence of our yielding ourselves is the disciples of the Holy Spirit producing His fruit in our lives.
“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7
Do not grieve the work of the Holy Spirit’s efforts to sanctify you by wandering through your day with a fatalistic attitude. But let us daily practice spiritual discipline which aids in our life in the Spirit.
“Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”1 Peter 1:13
