Reformation Remembered

Reformation Sunday is an important day in the life of the Christian Church.  It commemorates the Protestant Reformation, when the priests of the Catholic Church became concerned about how far the church’s doctrine had drifted away from scripture.  Men like John Hus, Martin Luther, and John Wycliffe led the way pointing out the church’s heresies and translating the scriptures from Latin into the common languages of the people.  Men like John Calvin and William Tyndale continued their work.  These men and women were condemned by the church and hunted down as criminals.  Many were martyred for their beliefs and teachings.

It is important that we know the scriptures so that our doctrine will be sound, true and authoritative.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

We need to repent of the worldliness which has found it’s way into our beliefs and therefore into our life.

‍ ‍“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.” 2 Timothy 4:3-4‍

“….Oh turn back, each of you from his evil way, and reform your ways and your deeds.’” Jeremiah 18:11

We need to determinedly hold to the authoritative truth of the Lord God Almighty’s word so that we can acknowledge and refute false teachings which creep into the Body of Christ.

“holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.” Titus 1:9
